The air was hot and the crowd was all dressed in khaki – not a standard gig for vocalist and guitarist Ian Moss.
Moss, of Annandale, was in East Timor to entertain Australian troops last month as part of one of the biggest tour groups to perform for our troops in some time.
Joining him were Vega 91.5 FM announcer and media personality Ian “Dicko” Dickson, Australian Idol talent Mark Spano and comedians Jeff Green and Lawrence Mooney.
Moss lifted the mood of the troops with classic tracks and new material, including his latest up-tempo soul single, Shake, from his new album Soul on West 53rd.
“It was my first time doing something like that and it was a very interesting experience,” Moss said.
It was a busy schedule, with Moss playing in four locations in four days during the tour.
“It all seemed pretty calm, a credit to the soldiers, the whole place has loosened up a bit, with more businesses and people going around,” Moss said.
He said the troops were grateful for the entertainment break.
“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but at the end of the shows the troops would say ‘thanks, it gets a bit tedious around here with training after training, it was a good break’.”
Moss is best known for playing lead guitar with the Australian rock band Cold Chisel and for his successful solo single Tucker’s Daughter.
